| Description: | The Associate Designer will be part of a dynamic, creative team of editors and designers who specialize in creating illustrated how-to books for beginning and intermediate enthusiasts. The primary responsiblity is to work with the editorial team and Design Manager to create book designs that meet the needs to that book's audience. 1. Concept and execute book covers and interiors for 7-8 illustrated how-to books per year that: * are well designed, creative, current and appealing to the target audience * meet marketing and editorial goals and objectives * are on time and efficiently executed and produced within budget * meet quantity standards and productivity goals 2. Work closely with editorial team to concept book design and title and to make sure book design meets needs of reader, book buyer, and author. 3. Work closely with Design Manager and Senior Designers to make sure book designs maintain overall brand look and standards. 4. Work closely with Production Department to make sure books are produced efficiently, accurately, and at high quality standards in a timely manner. Deliver files correctly prepared for printing. Review final proofs for quality and color accuracy. 5. Attend weekly team meetings and design meetings to facilitate communication and achieve duties 2, 3 and 4 above. 6. Prepare for and execute photo shoots for book imagery, scheduling dates, providing photo tear sheets and shots lists, hiring stylists (and occasionally models and makeup artists) and directing photography and stylists for shoots lasting 1-6 days. 7. Prepare photo budgets for book photo shoots, working closely with editorial, Design Manager or Senior Designers to account for all photography and illustration needs 8. Design and execute sales material (BLADS) for 7-10 books per year that accurately reflect the content of the book and sell the book concept to book buyers. 9. Research illustrations and images, finding and choosing images, cleaning them up, placing them in InDesign file. 10. Incorporate feedback from various sources into designs, interpreting feedback and working with Design Manager to reach final design. 11. Create ancillary materials for books, including advertisements, postcards, tradeshow signage, etc., in a timely fashion, working closely with Marketing Manager and Sales Rep for necessary feel and tone. 12. Account time spent each week, in a minimum of 15-minute increments, on all duties including book design, marketing and adminstrative work. 13. Other duties as assigned. |
| Requirements: | Degree in Graphic Design or related field required Extensive knowledge of Adobe CS-2 and/or CS-4, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
