| Description: | The Associate Editor creates and delivers inspiring craft books, fulfilling the development, content edit and production edit for eight to ten titles per year, working closely with the Managing Editor to complete these tasks. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Work with acquisition editor, author and designer to develop a clear plan for the book, based on audience, sales avenues, trends, etc. 2. Select best projects for the book and give feedback to authors on how projects would better suit the book’s audience. 3. Supervise step-by-step photo shoot and serve as host/hostess to authors during their stay. 4. Organize material from photo shoot and send to author as reference for writing the manuscript. Outline for author what text needs to be written. 5. Coordinate art, text and captions to provide a well thought out, instructional book that flows logically and matches the content set forth in #1 above. 6. Edit text for clarity and space, writing additional text as needed. 7. Create a thumbnail of the book to determine the placement of material. 8. Secure freelancers for copy editing, proofreading, technical editing and indexing each book; input their changes, and process their invoices. 9. Organize and label artwork, and communicate with designers and photographers to ensure appropriate photography; communicate with production department to ensure proper preparations for printer. 10. Keep abreast of craft trends and products and books by other publishers. 11. Participate in company Web communities, including blogging, answering reader questions and posting forum topics. 12. Participate in marketing meetings, including titling, for all craft books. |
| Requirements: | Skills: Proficiency in word processing programs Knowledge of InDesign and Mac operating systems preferred Ability to communicate well with others, especially artistic authors Ability to work on several projects at once, including projects at different stages of progress Ability to meet deadlines, problem solving and working with other departments to do so Ability to organize material in a logical way that best suits the given audience, and complete an editorial test/assignment to this effect Ability to judge appropriate level of effort necessary to achieve overall team goals for quality, timeliness and market appeal Specialized Skills: Knowledge of crafts covered by our imprint (crochet, knitting, quilting, polymer clay, beading, sewing, machine embroidery) is preferred Education: B.A. or B.F.A. degree For immediate consideration, email your cover letter (including salary requirements) & resume to: careers2@fwmedia.com |
